- █ Introduction █
- █▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█
-
-
- Thank you for down-loading StarCOM
- This software offering, StarCOM, was conceived as a set of
- programs to enable Blaiz users to use the familiar names for copy and
- del. See Other Products from OurSoft.
-
- It was broadened in scope to attempt to give users visibility and
- control over that previously 'hidden directory' of the DOS internal
- commands. Control just like that which we have all enjoyed with file
- directories. StarCOM consists of analogs to DIR, REN, COPY and DEL,
- which operate on the DOS internal commands.
-
- There are two main reasons you should get StarCOM. First is the
- ability to "Bypass DOS". This would be useful in conjunction with
- Blaiz so that the improved Copy and Del commands can be used with
- their familiar names. This can also be used with any third party
- improvement to DOS. For example, if you have a favorite DIR program
- called FastDIR you might really like changing the internal command DIR
- to say CAT (for catalogue) so you could rename FastDir.exe to DIR.exe.
- Then when you typed DIR, FastDIR would run!
-
- The second main reason you should get StarCOM is for foreign
- language localizing. For example, if you speak Japanese you could
- change the internal commands to Japanese, eg. if you change DIR to HYO
- when you type HYO you'll get the familiar file list. This works for
- any language: French, Greek, Swedish, German, etc..
-
- StarCOM is not a TSR, it rewrites command.com and so takes up no
- additional memory. It does not hook nor intercept interrupts which
- means universal program compatibility. It works equally from both
- command line or from a batch file.
-
-
-
- █▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀█
- █ About OurSoft █
- █▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█
-
-
- OurSoft was founded in 1987 by Richard Grubic.
-
- OurSoft's goal is to be your kind of software company. Your
- feedback in helping us better serve your needs is most welcome.
-
-
-
- █▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀█
- █ Why Register █
- █▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- ■ Registration is required for continued use past the ten day
- evaluation period.
-
- ■ Registration of the software gives you the satisfaction of knowing
- you did the right thing. You must register before you may order
- printed manuals, diskettes, or the Source Code.
-
- ■ To obtain OurSoft support for the software you must register both
- for support service and the software.
-
- ■ When you register to license the software you get direct notices of
- any major upgrades, enhancements or releases of the software.
-
- ■ When you register to license StarCOM you get on a diskette the three
- command files RENCOM.com, DELCOM.com and DUPCOM.com. These three are
- not made available in the shareware package StarCOM.zip because they
- modify command.com. You get a 60 day satisfaction or your money back
- guarantee.
-

- █▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀█
- █ Minimum Requirements █
- █▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█
-
-
- IBM PC, XT, AT or compatible computer
- DOS 2.10, 2.2X-3.3X
- single floppy disk
- 256 Kbytes main memory
-
-
-
- █▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀▀█
- █ Installation █
- █▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█
-
-
- Copy or unpack the StarCOM files *.com and *.exe to a
- subdirectory on the PATH you have set in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. See
- your DOS manual for how to use paths and how to create an AUTOEXEC.BAT
- file.
-
- Edit your autoexec.bat to add StarCM_C.exe. This will insure
- that the copyright notice is displayed when you start up your
- computer, rather than the first time you use a StarCOM program.

-
-
-
- ┌───────────┐
- │ DIRCOM │
- └───────────┘
-
- SYNTAX:
-
- DIRCOM
-
- There are no inputs for DIRCOM. The command.com pointed to by COMSPEC
- in the environment is used to display the commands.
-
- You will see a display of the internal commands:
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- C:\>dircom
-
- BREAK DATE FOR PAUSE RMDIR VERIFY
- CD DEL GOTO PROMPT SET VOL
- CHDIR DIR IF RD SHIFT
- CLS ECHO MD REM TIME
- COPY ERASE MKDIR REN TYPE
- CTTY EXIT PATH RENAME VER
-
- COMSPEC=C:\COMMAND.COM 0 characters unused
-
- -----------------------------------------------------------
-
- The number of characters unused is also displayed. This indicates how
- many characters can be added to the internal command table before
- another command name would need to be deleted to make more room. Note
- that each command has an additional required overhead of about 4
- characters.
-
-
-
-
- ┌───────────┐
- │ RENCOM │
- └───────────┘
-
- SYNTAX:
-
- RENCOM oldName newName
-
-
- Where oldName is the current command name you wish to change and
- newName is the command name to which you wish oldName changed.
-
- The inputs are optional on the command line. If you omit the inputs
- you will be prompted for the oldName and the newName.
-
- If the newName you request would increase the number of characters in
- the internal command table beyond that available, you will be prompted
- for which existing command you would like to delete in order to make
- room for your change. The proposed default for deletion will usually
- be one of the commands that already has a duplicate, such as RENAME
- which is a duplicate of REN in the original DOS command set. You may
- change the default to any existing command which you would prefer to
- have deleted.
-
- RENCOM is sent only to registered users because it modifies
- command.com.
-
-
-
- ┌───────────┐
- │ DELCOM │
- └───────────┘
-
- SYNTAX:
-
- DELCOM oldName
-
- Where oldName is the current command name you wish to delete.
-
- The input is optional on the command line. If you omit the input you
- will be prompted for the oldName.
-
- DELCOM is sent only to registered users because it modifies
- command.com.
-
-
-
- ┌───────────┐
- │ DUPCOM │
- └───────────┘
-
- SYNTAX:
-
- DUPCOM oldName newName
-
-
-
- Where oldName is the current command name you wish to duplicate and
- newName is the duplicate command name by which you also wish to call
- oldName.
-
- The inputs are optional on the command line. If you omit the inputs
- you will be prompted for the oldName and the newName.
-
- If the additional command name (newName) you request would increase
- the number of characters in the internal command table beyond that
- available, you will be prompted for one or more existing commands you
- would like to delete to make room for your new command name. The
- proposed default for deletion will usually be one of the commands that
- already has a duplicate, such as RENAME which is a duplicate of REN in
- the original DOS command set. You may change the default to any
- existing command which you would prefer to have deleted.
-
- DUPCOM is sent only to registered users because it modifies
- command.com.
-
-
-
- ┌───────────┐
- │ General │
- └───────────┘
-
- At any prompt you may press [Esc] to abort the command with no
- changes.
-
- RENCOM, DELCOM, and DUPCOM rewrite the internal command table in
- COMMAND.COM on disk and in memory. They do not terminate and stay
- resident and so do not use any extra main memory (RAM). The new
- commands can be called from both the command line and batch files.
- Note: You may need to update some of your batch files to use the new
- names.
-
-
- The StarCOM set does not hook or intercept any interrupts and so the
- modified DOS COMMAND.COM works perfectly even with TSR programs that
- require their interrupts in a special order.
-
-
-
- The StarCOM set modifies or views only the copy of COMMAND.COM pointed
- to by COMSPEC. You may modify or view a copy of COMMAND.COM different
- from COMSPEC only by changing COMSPEC.
-
- If you desire to see the internal commands in a different copy of
- command.com, then change COMSPEC with the DOS command:
-
- SET COMSPEC=filespec
-
- where filespec gives the drive, path and filename of the COMMAND.COM
- you wish to see.
-
- WARNING: You will probably want to change COMSPEC back to the
- original after viewing or changing a different command.com. Many
- programs use COMSPEC to reload command.com as they run. If COMSPEC is
- pointing to a different command.com than was loaded when the program
- began, your system will halt. If this happens reboot (Ctrl-Alt-Del).
-
- You can view the current COMSPEC by giving the DOS command SET with no
- inputs. DIRCOM also displays the COMSPEC used to find the internal
- commands.
-
- When estimating how many characters are available for a given change,
- note that each command has an additional required overhead of about 4
- characters. This will be reflected in the characters available
- displayed with the command names.
-
- Note: Deleting an internal command which has no duplicate, will leave
- that command inaccessible. The only way to re-access such a deleted
-
- command, is to begin with another copy of command.com which still has
- that command.
-
- DOS allows any 2 through 8 character name for any of the internal
- commands except the DIR command. Only any three (3) characters are
- allowed for DIR.
-
-
-
- ┌───────────┐
- │ Tips │
- └───────────┘
-
-
- Some programs and especially installation programs sometimes call the
- original DOS name for a command. If your program fails we suggest you
- either 1) RENCOM the command, e.g. copy, back to the original (COPY),
- or 2) invoke a secondary command processor using an original
- COMMAND.COM. To do this first change COMSPEC with SET
- COMSPEC=path\command to point to the original COMMAND.COM. Then
- invoke the original COMMAND.COM with:
-
- C:>path\command
-
- Where path is the path to the new copy of command.com. Run your
- program and then EXIT the secondary command processor and reset
- COMSPEC. A batch file can be set up to accomplish either of these.

- ┌──────────────┐
- │ Blaiz TM │
- └──────────────┘
-
- Blaiz has enhanced replacements for the DOS commands COPY and DEL
- as well as a MOVE command and an fast editor optimized for small batch
- files.
-
- Blaiz feels intuitive and comfortable. It has no command line
- switches. If Blaiz encounters a potential problem, it describes it
- and asks your choice. It has rigorous DOS wildcard compliance so you
- don't need to learn a new syntax.
-
- Blaiz is the safest copy, move and del. It checks for potential
- overwrites, duplicate targets, or disks too full, and gives you a
- warning message and a choice for each. With each choice you are
- presented the latest inputs for re-editing making the correction of
- errors easy.
-
- Blaiz makes you faster by saving you keystrokes.
-
- Blaiz allows multiple sources.
-
- The editor in Blaiz accepts all the ASCII characters 0-255,
- including NULL and Esc making it ideal for small quick batch files.
- For the small text files for which it was optimized, it is faster than
- any editor I have tried.
-
- One beta tester referring to the safety features and protections
- built into Blaiz said Blaiz really saved my bacon. It'll save your
- bacon too, and that alone will make it worth the $19.95 registration.
- By itself the editor would be worth the registration fee. Together
- Blaiz is a real value.
-
- Blaiz registration is $19.95. As an Introductory Offer, if you
- register both Blaiz and StarCOM before July 18, 1990 you get $10 off.
- So, save $10 by ordering both right away. -- See Prices in INFO.DOC.

- │ FWCONV │
- └───────────┘
-
- ■ Convert ASCII files to MSWord.
-
- ■ Convert FinalWord files to ASCII.
-
- ■ Convert FinalWord files to MSWord.
-
-
- The Conversion from ASCII to MSWord is a smart conversion that
- recognizes paragraphs and tables. The left margin is stripped.
-
- To convert from ANY word processor to MSWord, print your docs
- from any word processor in ASCII (or redirect print output to a file),
- and then convert with FWCONV.
-
-
- If you use MSWord you'll want FWCONV for those times when you
- save a file with 'Text-only-with-line-breaks' and then later desire to
- edit that file with MSWord. FWCONV will put it back into a form
- MSWord prefers, simplifying this greatly.
-
- FWCONV registration is $9.95.

- │ Turbo Brief TM │
- └──────────────────┘
-
- Turbo Brief is an enhancement for Brief and so requires Brief to
- work. Turbo Brief doubles the number of functions of Brief making the
- combination the most powerful editor today. Some highlights are:
-
- ■ A pulldown menuing system.
-
- ■ Integrated Make collects errors from mixed languages and gives you
- point and shoot access. Skip directly to correct file and line
- no matter the source language. No one else has this.
-
-
-
- ■ Full screen pick list display of history for each and every
- command.
-
- ■ Full editing power for commands even brings Undo to the command
- line. Commands visible up to 72 characters wide.
-
- ■ Integrated access to Turbo Debugger or Codeview with one hot-key.
-
-
-
-
-
- ■ Hot-key to patching language help or integrated debugger in
- Borland's Turbo IDE.
-
- ■ Two key sets, one with original Brief keys and one that makes Brief
- act just like Turbo IDE. If you use Borland Turbo languages
- you'll love this.
-
- The Beta testers of Turbo Brief said they'd rather fight than
- switch back to Brief without Turbo Brief or back to Turbo IDE. Turbo
- Brief is not shareware but has a 60 day money back guarantee, and is
- sold directly for $199.50.

- █ StarCOM Tutorial █
- █▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄█
-
-
- If you haven't already, install StarCOM. See Installation.
-
- Make a copy of the original COMMAND.COM in another subdirectory.
-
- Type DIRCOM to see the current DOS commands.
-
- (Note: You need to register StarCOM and receive the three command
- files for RENCOM, DELCOM, an DUPCOM in order to finish the rest of
- this tutorial.)
-
- Change a command. Change DIR to CAT for catalogue of files.
-
- RENCOM dir cat
-
- Type DIR and see that it no longer exists as a command name.
- Type CAT and see the familiar DOS directory.
-
- Change a second command. Change COPY to DOSCOPY.
-
- RENCOM copy doscopy
-
- A command is proposed for deletion because the available characters
- are exceeded by this request (unless you already deleted something
- else).
- Type Enter to accept the default deletion.
-
- Type DIRCOM and note that CAT not DIR and DOSCOPY not COPY are present
- in the list of current internal commands.
-
- Delete a command.
-
- DELCOM erase
-
- Check DIRCOM and confirm ERASE is now missing.
-
- Duplicate a command.
-
- DUPCOM del scrub
-
- Erase some files.
-
- SCRUB *.bak
-
- This will confirm that scrub now functions just like del and the
- original erase.
-
- Reboot with Ctrl-Alt-Del. Run DIRCOM to see that all of your changes
- are still intact.
-
-
- To end the tutorial, doscopy the original COMMAND.COM back to
- overwrite the altered COMMAND.COM and reboot.
